What is Ummeldung

Whenever you change your address in Berlin, you must notify the city by registering your new flat. This process is called Ummeldung and it is a legal requirement for everyone living in the city. You have two ways to update your records:

  • In person: the traditional way of visiting a Bürgeramt.
  • Online: a digital process you can complete from home if you have a valid electronic ID.

You are required to complete this step within 14 days of moving in.
It is a straightforward update that ensures your official documents and tax records stay current.

The difference between Anmeldung and Ummeldung

When you arrive in Germany for the very first time, you do your Anmeldung. That first registration must happen in person at a local office (Bürgeramt). The Ummeldung is what you do later when you move from one flat to another within the country. Since the government already has your basic info, Berlin now lets you handle this change entirely online. This is a huge relief because it means you do not have to fight for an appointment weeks in advance.

Who can use the online process

The digital path works best for people with a standard rental situation and a main residence in Germany. It is perfect if you have a normal contract and all your papers ready. However, the system might still ask you to visit the Bürgeramt in person if your situation is a bit unusual. This often happens with complex sublet deals or if some documents are missing. It is always smart to check the official portal first to see if your specific case qualifies for the digital update.

Setting up your BundID account

To start the Ummeldung online process, you need something called a BundID account. Think of this as your personal digital key for German government services. You can create your account on the BundID website and verify who you are using your electronic ID card. If you are an EU citizen with a chip in your ID card, you can use the AusweisApp2 on your phone. For people from outside the EU, the steps might look a bit different depending on your specific residence permit.

Documents you need to prepare

Even though you are doing this from your sofa, you still need to provide the right proof. The most vital paper is the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung, which is the official confirmation signed by your landlord. You also need a digital copy of your valid ID, such as your passport or national identity card.
In case of a multi person household Ummeldung, the online portal allows you to register everyone at the same time. You must have the identification documents ready for all members of the household because the system will ask for their specific details during the process.

Post submission steps

Once you submit your digital application, the authorities process it in 3 steps:

  • Email confirmation: A notification confirms that the portal received your documents.
  • Digital certificate: Your Registration Certificate (Meldebestätigung) is available for download within 1 to 3 business days.
  • Address sticker: The official ID card sticker arrives at your new address by post.

This manual verification concludes within a few days, making it faster than waiting for an appointment.

Technical requirements

You only need a smartphone or a computer with decent internet. If you use your electronic ID, your phone must have NFC.
Most modern phones have it already.
You will also need the AusweisApp2 to connect your physical card to the website. Make sure your camera lens is clean before taking photos of your documents so the system can read them easily. If your phone case is very thick, try taking it off to help the NFC reader find the chip.

Practical benefits and things to keep in mind

Doing your Ummeldung online saves you from standing in long queues at the Bürgeramt. You get everything done at home and receive a digital confirmation as soon as it is processed. Keep in mind that technology can sometimes be glitchy, so it is best to follow the official instructions very closely.
